Cold sores: first, you need to be sure they are indeed cold sores, or herpes simplex. A physician or dentist can help. If they are indeed a herpes simplex infection, there are a number of oral antiviral medications, such as acyclovir and famvir (famciclovir). Acyclovir is also available as any ointment. Good luck!

See your dentist: Cold sores are a result of HSV infection. There are multiple medications that work GREAT for treating cold sores. Get with your dentist and try a few to see what works best. If you are a holistic person, some people like to take L-Lysine on a regular basis; it inhibits the entry of arginine into the cell which is a precursor for viral replication.

Acyclovir : Acyclovir can be used to treat as well as for prophylaxis (prevention). Talk with you primary care doctor.
