There is extra risk: This depends on how severe your SLE is. The hormones in birth control pills can make SLE more active. This is not usually a problem in mild SLE but can be dangerous with severe disease. Pregnancy also can worsen SLE so this must be weighed against the risk of birth control pills. This is something you should discuss with your rheumatologist.
