Sports?: Do you play any sports? If so you could have injured your knee internally. Hard to diagnose without an exam. I would see an orthopedic surgeon for full testing to determine the cause

Unstable knee.: It is possible that you have ruptured lateral collateral ligament of the knee. You need an MRI of the knee to be taken beside examination of the knee. See your doctor . May need referral to Ortho.
