Capsaicin: not only affects substance P; other peptides such as CGRP and somatostatin are also decreased. Depletion of these neurotransmitters reduces the transmission of nociceptive information to the CNS. Capsaicin acts at a specific receptor site - the vanilloid receptor (VR1) present on both C-fibers and A-delta fibers. Nothing to do with opioids.
