2-4 Days: Slowing of the bowels is common after abdominal surgery. Taking narcotic pain medication can add to this as well. I generally recommend my patients take an over the counter laxative (Milk of Magnesia, Senokot (senna) or Colace) starting the day after surgery. 3 days from the surgery with no bowel movement I would recommend a patient starts taking one of these.
