May need to see Doc.: The first thing I think of in this situation is a ruptured Baker's Cyst. That said, if there is a chance that you suffered an insect bite or breach in the skin there, you could have an infection. If you do have redness, pain and any symptoms like fever or nausea, this should be evaluated immediately. Blood clots can form in superficial or deep veins in this area, and varicose veins are common.

Knee pain: pain behind the knee with swelling could mean an inflamed vein or thrombophlebitis. I would try a cool compress/water to apply on the leg and also would try an anti inflammatory like motrin or advil (ibuprofen) as needed. If you have persistent pain or trouble breathing it might indicate a more serious problem and you should see your doctor about it. Best to see your doctor about it. good luck!
