Rest.: I think that you should allow for a rest period to let you body heal. Continuing to stress a strained muscle will take it much longer to get back to normal. A few days' rest should be fine, unless symptoms have not resolved by then. In that case, you might benefit from imaging of your back.

Back pain: As long as you are not getting worse with exercise, you may want to consider some daily activity and perhaps adding OTC ibuprofen/alleve. Be sure to increase water.
