Surface problem: Starburst and ghosting in the absence of eye surgery usually occur as a result of a problem on the surface of the eye. The most common causes are allergy and dry eye. Allergy causes thin mucus film that induces distortion. Dryness causes optical aberrations. Some refractive errors, especially astigmatism and irregular astigmatism cause them. Corneal edema, or swelling, esp after swimming.
