Several: The most common cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis which is an auto-immune disorder.Other causes,which would not apply to you based on your question, include:radioactive iodine treatment,radiation therapy to neck,medications(amiodorone,interferon,lithium).Keep follow up with your doctor to get your treatment.Best wishes.

Mostly, autoimmune: I was surprised to find that in about 90% of non-elderly with hypothyroidism, the immune system is attacking the thyroid and stomping it.
