Laxatives=problems: Stool softeners do not cause deficiencies, but laxatives can cause many issues including electrolyte abnormalities. Chronic constipation needs to be evaluated. There are multiple medications that may be helpful including OTC Miralax, and prescription Amitiza (lubiprostone) and Linzess as well as older agents such as metaclopramide. Your MD can help you find an effective treatment.

Yes: Long term use of harsh laxatives like milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) or castor oil can cause nutritional problems but mainly they cause the colon to become more and more sluggish, causing more laxative use.
