Does long term use of stool softeners and laxatives cause vitam and mineral imbalances/ deficiencies?

The simple answer is: No...but it depends on the product, its mechanism of action, and nutritional sufficiency by the individual.

Laxatives=problems: Stool softeners do not cause deficiencies, but laxatives can cause many issues including electrolyte abnormalities. Chronic constipation needs to be evaluated. There are multiple medications that may be helpful including OTC Miralax, and prescription Amitiza (lubiprostone) and Linzess as well as older agents such as metaclopramide. Your MD can help you find an effective treatment.

Yes: Long term use of harsh laxatives like milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) or castor oil can cause nutritional problems but mainly they cause the colon to become more and more sluggish, causing more laxative use. If you have a problem moving your bowels or you are using laxatives for weight loss you should consult your primary care for advice. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!
