Common practice: That is a common practice although the idea of Lo Lo Estrin is to make the cycles so light they are alsmot not noticeable. This may not be the best pill for you if you are going to skip the placebo pills and use birth control continuously. Only the last two days are hormone free with this brand. Consider using a Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD. This would likely help you more.
