Nail avulsion: Nail avulsions occur then the nail is detached from the matrix/bed beneath it. The existing nail is likely to fall off, and with time a new one should develop, although it's appearance may be altered. Treatment is supportive. Keeping the foot elevated, wrapping the toe in a bandage, cool compresses and pain medications are typically advised. Nail removal may be needed to prevent snagging.
