Gene, marker : Her2 refers to a gene present in many normal cells that codes for a cell surface protein. In 10-15% of breast cancers it is amplified (multiple copies producing a lot of the protein) which is associated with a more aggressive tumor. Herceptin (trastuzumab) (an antibody to the protein) reduces this aggressive nature. It's usually given with chemo for synergy.
