Myalgias: Various infections: strep, flu, mono to name a few, cause a lot of inflammation and release of cytokines (inflammatory chemicals) that can cause our bodies/muscles to feel achy while we are sick. The aches are just part of the symptoms. If your neck is hurting so much that you can't move your head without extreme pain then it could be something worse and would require a visit to the docs ASAP.
