Pityriasis: What you are describing could be pityriasis. Pityriasis is a rash that causes red patches just like you described and is often mistaken for ringworm. It can occur anywhere on the body and is often itchy but not always. It is not contagious and will go away on it's own in about 6-8 weeks.
