Explanation below: Alcohol is associated with a macrocytic (with large RBCs) anemia and can also, by irritating the stomach, cause blood loss and iron deficiency. RBC deformability is more likely to be related to abnormal hemoglobin content (sickle cell anemia is the most well-known, but there are others as well).
