D3: Hi. Most of us feel your serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level should be over 30; I try for mid-30's to 40's in my patients. Cholecalciferol, or vitamin D3, is what is most commonly used for nutritional replacement (ergocalciferol, or vitamin D2, is also used although less preferred than D3). You should take at least 5,000 units/day and have your 25-hydroxyvitamin D level checked again in 2-3 months.

Fish: Fatty fishes (tuna, mackerel, catfish, salmon) are one source. Eggs have some; beef liver has a little. Cod liver oil has a lot. After that, you're looking at fortified dairy products or cereals that have vitamin d added to them, or vitamin d supplements or multi-vitamins.

Rx Vitamin-D: There is a prescription version of concentrated Vitamin-D3. If you have a good drug plan, this is probably the least expensive option (for a generic copay). There are a few good brands out there - such as Thorne Research Labs, Pure Encapsulations and Designs for Health. Hope that helps!
