Different : Philosophy. Soe doctors start checking at 36 and some later. If you aren't contracting there is not a lot of need to check right now.

Different styles: This is simply a difference in style and philosophy. Some OB's feel that weekly exams in the absence of any symptoms are unnecessarily intrusive and do not provide enough (or any) useful information and may occasionally cause problems. This approach is particularly common among midwives.

Not done universally: Some OB doctors check cervix weekly, but most base it upon suspicion of impending or early labor. Whether or not your cervix is dilating does not change our management unless there is a good medical reason to consider inducing labor. Otherwise, the best thing is to await spontaneous labor.
