Likely inflammation: Often osteoarthritis presents first with pain at the base of the thumb, but in someone your age, it is much more likely to be due to overuse--perhaps while doing something like your profile picture depicts. Try NSAID (ibuprofen, naproxen), heat, avoid overuse. If not improved, see health care provider.
