As always, only if..: Only if the "new" food (in this case the ash gourd or winter melon) is lower in calories, or is eaten in smaller amounts in order to achieve lower calories, than the "old" food items previously in the diet. Merely adding ash gourd will not decrease one's weight if one is still eating all the "old" items in the same old amounts, because one would be adding some calories instead of taking away.
