Type of tissue: A mass that is felt or seen on mammogram etc is an unknown tissue. Most are normal some are cancer. The only way to tell for sure is to biopsy it and look at cells under microscope. If it is cancer, that will also say what kind it is and really help us know how it needs to be treated.

The diagnosis: Pathology exam is done by a specialist who reviews the tissue samples taken with the biopsy under a microscope. The pathologist then determines the exact nature of the disease process affecting that tissue. They can determine if the problem is due to a malignant condition (Cancer) or a benign condition (Non-malignant). There are many different possibilities and a diagnosis is then rendered.
