It's true: It would actually be abnormal not to have any REM cycles during sleep. This is one of the normal stages of sleep for basically all of us. While dreams are felt to most commonly occur during REM sleep, you don't necessarily have to be dreaming during REM and more likely is that you don't "remember" the respective dreams.
