REM is later stage: REM sleeps occurs ~ 90 minutes after the onset of sleep. This is the time when intense dreaming occurs.

REM: REM sleep occurs throughout the night, however more predominantly later night/early morning. During this type of sleep most memorable dreaming occurs. Normal REM latency is approximately 1 - 1 1/2 hours however can occur earlier in various conditions such as Narcolepsy, depression and certain medications.
