P. Vera & spleen: Polycythemia vera (P. vera) is a condition in which a gene mutation (JAK-2) causes uncontrolled production of red blood cells (rbc) that carry oxygen in the bloodstream. Typically, rbc production is confined to the bone marrow, but in p. vera, the spleen can be a site of rbc production, growing in size. Untreated P. vera is a serious disease, but when treated, prognosis is quite good.
