Normal.: A 2 years old child usually develops preference for one parent either mom or dad - mostly mom .It is quite normalI IT may change later on as the child grows

It can certainly : happen without Dad's having done anything wrong & can be very hurtful. Schedule an outing for Mom while Dad is casually playing with a new or interesting toy. Mom should say "Good-bye; I'll be back soon" matter-of-factly & leave. Dad can then invite the child to play, ignore refusals & keep playing without reinforcing the tot's protests by giving them negative or positive attention. Casual is key.
