Same virus: The varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox (aka varicella) and shingles (herpes zoster). They just manifest in different ways.

It is the same virus: Shingles is reactivation of the chicken pox virus, which stays dormant in a person's body indefinitely after they have had acute chicken pox.

Varicella-Zoster: It is recognized that a virus caused both. After c-pox infection the virus is dormant in skin nerve cells commonly in the face or trunk. If the virus turns active, it causes shingles, and the virus is then referred to as herpes zoster. Virus is activated in people with weakened immune system, such as those with cancer or hiv, over age of 50, ill, injured, or under stress.
