Too young for sex: 12 is too young to be sexually active. Pregnancy would be high risk. All methods of birth control have side effects and risks except abstinence. Why does this 12 year old need contraceptives? Is she institurionalized?

No: You can use it in a 12 year old, but she is on the young side.. There are side effects and risks to taking Depo-Provera provera (medroxyprogesterone) as there are to any medication. I would discuss your concerns with her physician. There many options for birth control ( all with side effects). You can always get a second opinion as well.
