As a concept?: Fashion aside, yes you can be allergic to some of the less expensive metals used. Look for posts made from surgical/stainless steel, silver or gold. Avoid nickel, as the most common cheaper metal used that is notorious for allergy / sensitivity reactions.

Yes: The metal in earrings, especially the inexpensive ones, often contains nickel, to which many people are allergic. Using solid gold posts is the best course of actin, just not the cheapest.

Nickel: nickel allergy is common and people with nickel allergy who wear nickel earrings can get a localized reaction. So yes, you can be allergic to the material the earrings are made of such as nickel.
