Repeat it.: Atypical lymphocytes can be caused by a viral illness. If you are worried about lymphoma/leukemia, ask to have a recheck of your blood counts to rule out lab error. I discovered a patient who was perfectly normal had his blood sample mixed up with a patient with leukemia. I told him I didn't believe it, but he had an anxious time waiting for the results of the next test. Humans make mistakes.
