Allodynia newer name: Cutaneous hyperesthesia is a bit dated. Several things such as migraines, acute appendicitis, radiculopathies of the cervical and lumbar spines, Shingles or a herpetic skin infection can cause this heightened sensation of the skin which can also be seen in a condition know as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or (CRPS) which can occur after a major injury, surgery/operation, or long bone fracture.
