See below: An acute attack of gout will usually cause a very painful, swollen and red joint. Common areas for gout are the big toe, elbow, knee. It can be confirmed by draining joint fluid and looking under a microscope for uric acid crystals. Treated with antiinflamamtories and joint rest. In between attacks, many people go on medicine to keep their uric acid levels low. Seen frequently in diabetics.

Joint pain, etc.: An acute gout attack is one of the most severe joint pains that you can experience. The most common site is the big toe. The joint can be tender, red, warm, or swollen or a combination of these. Gout can cause joint deformity. The good news is that gout is a very treatable disease with dietary changes and medication.
