A member asked:

I've read that squamous metaplasia (with inflammation) may need follow up and monitoring as it can lead to cancer later on? is that true?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: Squamous metaplasia is the precursor of squamous cancer. Whether in the vaginal area or oral cavity one needs careful exam and possibly periodic biopsies. In the oral cavity the appearance of leukoplakia suggests excision. If any vaginal lesion is seen local excision is needed. Should transformation appear, aggressive treatment needed to prevent progression.
