Congratulations!: What an exciting time with "numero uno" pregnancy. The vaginal ultrasound doesn't hurt, only feels like "stretching" much like how you got pregnant in the first place. (smile). If you are in the early part of pregnancy and under 8 weeks then a gestational sac will be seen but not identifiable as fetal parts After 10 to 12 weeks you can start to make out anatomical fetal structures.

New baby: To evaluate the baby they will want to put a probe in the vagina. This should not be more uncomfortable than any routine pelvic exam by a doctor. If the baby is large enough to see I would expect they would share the image with you. Usually mothers get a copy of a picture of the ultrasound. There is no risk to the baby as they use only sound waves.
