Risk of Hodgkin's dz: There is no one "defect" that causes hodgkin's disease, but risk factors include a high socioeconomic status, having a family member with the disease, prior epstein-barr virus infection (mononucleosis), and immunosuppression as a result of conditions like aids, organ or marrow transplantation, autoimmune disease, and immunosuppressant medications.

Hodgkin's lymphoma: is a malignancy of a type of B-lymphocytes, known as a Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cell (HRS). It has been a challenge to study this disease because the HRS cell secretes factors that causes it to be surrounded by large numbers of normal lymphocytes. LRS cell neoplasia appears to result from a combination of gene mutations, like other lymphomas; and are often infected with EBV (Epstein Barr virus).
