SMP: A constant, burning pain that is often accompanied by paresthesia or dysesthesia is characteristic of the continuous neuralgias. Some continuous neuropathic pains are also maintained by the sympathetic nervous system and are designated as sympathetically maintained pain (SMP). The exact mechanism is idiopathic.

History...: Prior history of injury, surgery, multiple procedures, could be the trigger for this problem. It is a dysregulation of the transmission of pain and can cause severe symptoms. Multiple meds and therapy have been postulated to help relieve symptoms which include also support and behavioral therapy.
