PREMATURITY: It depends on several factors. Birth defects are common among small premies when the mother got sick or exposed to rubella for example during the first trimester. Those born with less problems grow up normal.

Backwards logic: While some babies with birth defects are more likely to be born prematurely, prematurity itself does not cause birth defects.
