A member asked:

Can not chewing well & swallowing food tear esophagus? chest hurt when swallowing cookie. afterwards no symptoms, but can it be torn asymptomatically?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unlikely: A complete tear of the esophagus from normal food would be very unlikely, and you'd know it if it happened (think lots of blood and pain). Esophageal stasis is a condition where normal motility in the esophagus is decreased, leading to pain and difficulty swallowing. The swallowing of hard crunchy foods can cause superficial but painful scratches to the lining of the esophagus.
