Respiratory stimulnt: The caffeine in many teas are chemicals called methylxanthines. These have a mild respiratory stimulant effect. Caffeine is a cousin of aminophyllin, a med used for years to help control asthma, although newer meds have less troubling side effects at effective dose levels. Teas may be have a mild soothing effect, but their use in management of true asthma events is meager at best.
