Mouth lesions: Herpes sores are infectious, virus sores,contagious. Treated with acyclovir.They may recur.. Avoid mouth kissing, oral sex or touch with hands as you could spread it to other parts of the body.. Canker sore (aphthous ulcer) is a general term for non infectious oral sores from stress, trauma,hormones, vitamin deficiency, foods , autoimmune disease like celiac /Crohns. Treat underlying condition

Skin and membrane: Canker sores only occur on the mucous membrane and its cause is unknown. Herpes sore or cold sores are located at the junction of the skin and mucous membrane. Nearly everyone has contracted Herpes simplex I virus but it only causes cold sores in a small number of people. Thus it is not a new infection and poses no problem in transmitting to other people (who already have the infection)
