Sounds like sciatica: Pain radiating down the back of the leg from the hip to the knee is typically caused by sciatica. This is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve caused by something irritating it where it comes out of the spine (e.g. Herniated disc) or where the nerve passes behind the hip (e.g. The piriformis muscle). Treatment is bedrest, warm heat, gentle stretching, and anti-inflammatory medication.
