Stomach upset: Usually, it is to prevent your stomach from being upset. With your history of bloating, I would recommend you take any vitamins or drugs with food unless the pharmacist recommends you take them on an empty stomach (this is rare)

Vitamin with food: Taking vitamins with food makes their absorption a bit slower. Slower absorption then allows the vitamin to circulate over a longer time and not get excreted promptly by your kidneys. Some vitamins, like A, D, E are fat soluble and their absorption is enhanced with food. If you take B and C without food, you will absorb them quickly and excrete them quickly into your urine.
