Mental help: Consider talking with her to see if there is some issue she might be concerned enough about to see a health provider for and then take her for that reason even if it doesn't have anything to do with weight loss or being mean.

Needs to be seen...: If this is the case there many ailments that can be life threatening at this time due to the rapid weight loss and changes in behavior. I am to sure how serious is her mental illness but you want to call her mental heath provider for advise on how to talk to her into seeing a doctor for evaluation. If she gets disoriented yo can always check who is her legal proxy and take over her case.

Is she demented?: I'm assuming you've asked nicely and she's bitten your head off telling you that nothing's wrong? How old is she? Is she possibly demented or does she suffer from schizophrenia? Anybody else in the family who she trusts enough to take a suggestion? Can you get a doctor to make a housecall? Would she be willing to someone from HEALTHTAP over the computer?? Nonthreatening, doesn't have to leave home
