Ultrasound: Benign cyst have a less complex appearance on an ultrasound. Malignant cyst look more complex and may have solid areas. You OB/GYN can usually tell you their impression. If they are concerned the cyst can be surgically removed and reviewed by a pathologist.

Several ways: Cancers and benign cysts have several different appearances on ultrasound. Benign cysts are usually thin walled and fluid filled. Cancers are usually a mixture of different densities or solid.

Fluid content: Cysts are fluid filled and usually benign. Cancers are usually solid. Ultrasound can show whether a growth contains fluid and thus whether it is likely a cyst or a solid growth. A biopsy is needed in questionable cases to be sure. Good luck!
