Abdomen pain: Appendicitis pain usually progresses. Flank pain can indicate kidney stone, especially if there is blood in the urine, or if accompanied by nausea or vomiting. Excess gas can cause this as well, and is often intermittent, but usually resolves on its own over a day or so. If your pain persists or worsens, see your doctor.

Unlikely: Appendicitis pain is unlikely to come and go.It generally comes and grows.A pattern of pain more likely to act as you have described is common with kidney stones. Stones trying to pass down the ureter will often cause intermittent lower abdominal and flank pain that can go on for days. Many will pass with good hydration but some need to be removed by a urologist.
