Risk of stroke: The internal carotid artery enters the skull through a canal in the petrous bone (one of the skull bones). Stenosis of the canal can occur with osteopetrosis that could extrinsically compress internal carotid artery. More commonly, atherosclerosis can lead to intrinsic stenosis of the carotid artery. In either situation, the individual is at increased risk of stroke. See physician soon.
