Only benefits: Metoprolol's side effects are largely short-term and related to it lowering heart rate and blood pressure. Long-term adverse effects are not commonly known, but there are long-term benefits. Namely, it lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke by reducing the pressure on your blood vessels. It can also prevent heart failure from getting worse in those who have it.
