Classic signs...: Classic signs and symptoms of COPD include shortness of breath, cough (often with sputum production), decreased or increased sleep, decreased appetite, weight loss or weight gain (especially with fluid retention), decreased oxygen level in blood, decreased activity level, etc. The diagnosis is made by seeing chronic obstruction on pulmonary function testing, which can occur without any symptoms.

Emphysema.: Emphysema is a destruction of lung tissue with resultant reduction in oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange and respiratory effort. This leads to shortness of breath and chronic productive cough. It's usually due to smoking but could be due to other medial conditions. It's treatable but not curable.
