Cough, sputum,: The three cardinal symptoms of an exacerbation (flare up, worsening episode) are increased shortness of breath, cough, and increased sputum, or change in color of sputum beyond the normal day to day variation and requiring a change in treatment such as increased rescue inhaler, antibiotics and/or steroids. Severe exacerbations require hospitalization.
