Circadian rhythm: Your brain suppresses melatonin secretion with exposure to light to help wakefulness. When it is dark, melatonin is secreted which causes sleepiness. That is why using electronics in bed or watching television before sleep in bed is such a bad idea for people with trouble sleeping. It's the effect of the light.
