Several uses: It is most commonly used to treat those who have significant liver disease and complicating hepatic encephalopathy - a form of metabolic confusion. But it also used to treat traveler's diarrhea(not as common) and concerns over bacterial overgrowth in the intestinal tract and irritable bowel syndrome. Hope this helps.

Travelers diarrhea: Rifaximin is most commonly prescribed for traveler's diarrhea caused by the E.Coli germ. It is also approved for treating recurring episodes of hepatic encephalopathy, a brain disorder that results when toxins caused by severe liver disease affect the brain function.
